Committees

Committees play an important role in decision-making and governance in the University.  The Council Committee Framework introduced at the start of the 2010/11 academic session, and the Framework of Senate Committees outline the hierarchy and reporting lines between the formal standing University committees.

All committees report either to the Council (the supreme governing body) or to the Senate (which has delegated responsibility from the Council for academic matters).  The University Court receives an annual report from the Council, but is subordinate to the Council as the governing body.

The University Executive Board meets on a weekly basis to steer the implementation of University strategy and policies, and to address matters which arise between the formal meetings of Senate and Council.  Supporting the committees and University officers are a number of input groups, which have flexibility in how they fulfil their briefs and in their modes of meeting.

Committees and input groups carry out a variety of functions, including:

  • transaction of business;
  • generation of creative proposals and solutions; and
  • scrutiny of actions.

These emphases are reflected in the different ways in which committees operate.
